A programmable logic controller, PLC, or controller is a digital computer used for the automation of typical industrial electromechanical processes, such as mechanical control of factory assembly lines, amusement devices or lamps. PLC is designed for multiple layouts of digital and analog input and output, extended temperature range, resistance to electrical noise, vibration and shock. An example of a "hard" real-time system, because the output result must be produced in a limited continuous response to the input conditions, otherwise it will cause unexpected operation
The main difference from other computers is that PLCs are armored under harsh conditions (such as dust, humidity, heat, and cold) and have a wide range of input/output (I/O) facility arrangements. These connect PLCs to sensors and Actuator. PLCs read the position of limit switches, analog process variables (such as temperature and pressure), and complex positioning systems. Some use machine vision. On the actuator side, PLCs operate motors, pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders, magnetic relays, solenoids or analog outputs. The input/output device can be built into a simple PLC, or the PLC can have external I/O modules connected to a computer network plugged into the PLC.
